New Leadership, Bright Future: IFS Youth Orchestras Announce Conductors and Celebrate Season Success

A Season Ends, a New Chapter Begins for IFS Youth Orchestras

There’s always a special kind of energy at the final concert of the season.

For the Idaho Falls Symphony Youth Orchestras, this year’s Spring Concert was more than just a performance—it was a celebration. Across Preparatory Strings Orchestra, Philharmonia, and Youth Symphony, students took the stage with confidence, musicianship, and a sense of accomplishment that only comes from months of hard work.

It was a moment to pause and reflect on how far these young musicians have come. To marvel at the beautiful and extraordinary performance of Concerto Comeptition Winner, Lily Thomas. And to ve inspired by music.

And, as it turns out, it was also the beginning of something new.

Turning the Page

Behind the scenes this season, IFSYO has been preparing for an important transition: welcoming new artistic leadership for the years ahead. After a thoughtful search process—one that included valuable input from students—the organization is excited to introduce the next chapter.

At the center of that chapter is Ariel Loveland, the newly appointed Youth Symphony Conductor.

Ariel brings both depth and energy to the role. As an orchestra director in the Madison School District, she has been recognized multiple times as Teacher of the Year. As a professional violinist, she brings real-world performance experience to her teaching. And perhaps most importantly, she has a deep commitment to working with student musicians at a pivotal point in their growth.

“I played in the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony 23 years ago and loved my time there,” said Loveland. “It has grown tremendously since then, and I am sincerely grateful for each guiding hand that has led the group to where it is today. I am confident we can build on the amazing foundation that has been laid and take the orchestra to new heights. It is a humbling and beautiful responsibility. I can’t wait to make music with this choice group of young people!”

She’ll step into this role alongside Assistant Conductor Eric Smith, continuing a collaborative approach that supports students both musically and personally.

A Growing Team

The sense of momentum doesn’t stop there.

IFSYO is also welcoming Melissa Dayley as the new Philharmonia Conductor. With a Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting and a wide range of experience in teaching and youth music leadership, Melissa brings both expertise and enthusiasm to the ensemble. She will partner with Annalee Kelly, creating a strong and supportive environment for Philharmonia musicians to develop their skills.

Meanwhile, the foundation of the entire program remains as strong as ever.

In Preparatory Strings Orchestra, Annalee Kelly and Lauren Anderson continue their work with beginning and developing musicians—helping students build not only technique, but also confidence and a genuine love for playing together. Their efforts create the pathway that leads students into Philharmonia and eventually Youth Symphony.

This coming year will also see continued growth in the small ensemble program, giving students even more opportunities to collaborate, take ownership of their learning, and experience music in new ways.

Looking Forward

For Executive Director Carrie Athay, these changes are about more than just new names—they represent a shared vision for the future.

“These appointments represent an exciting step forward for IFSYO,” she said. “Ariel, Melissa, and our returning faculty bring exceptional experience and a shared commitment to nurturing young musicians. We are thrilled to welcome this talented team as we look ahead to the next season.”

That next season is already just around the corner.

The Next Step Starts Now

For many students, the journey begins with an audition.

Youth Symphony auditions will be held May 26, 27, and 28, offering young musicians the opportunity to take the next step in their musical development and become part of this evolving program.
